Fig. 7 shows the two conveyers 20, 95 and the arrangement at the transfer station 96 where lugs 110 on conveyer 95 engage brackets on buckets 58 and drive the buckets at a higher speed. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement in a system for accumulating a predetermined number of packages and cartoning the accumulated packages. Packages are delivered to buckets 58 at loading stations 74, a predetermined number (e.g. 4) of packages being delivered to each bucket, which is then recoupled to demand conveyer 20 and advanced to a transfer station where timing conveyer 95 engages the bucket and advances it at the same speed as accumulator conveyer 21 so that the stack of packages may be transferred by means 120 to bucket 29 on conveyer 21. The contents of each bucket 29 are then transferred by means 121 to a carton in a holder 34 on cartoner 23. The releasable coupling of the buckets on conveyer 20 is by means of a flexible friction band mounted on an endless chain comprising conveyer 20 in conjunction with slip-friction connectors on each bucket.
