Sintered magnesia for use in mfg. refractories - made from mixt. of natural and synthetic magnesia, which improves the refractories

A mixt. is made of (a) synthetic-magnesite or -magnesia; and (b) natural-magnesite or -magnesium hydroxide; and the mixt. is calcined to form MgO. The mixt. pref. has an (a):(b) ratio of 95:5 to 80-20. The MgO obtd. has improved refractory properties, and a higher strength and density. Synthetic MgO, obtd. e.g. from seawater, has a higher purity than natural MgO, so improved refractory properties are obtd. Conversely, natural MgO promotes the formation of periclase, which increases the mechanical strength and the density of the refractory materials made using the MgO. The invention combines the advantages of the two materials.
