1516225 Petroleum pitch BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 8 Sept 1976 [29 Sept 1975] 37183/76 Heading C5E Petroleum pitch is produced by blowing a heavy petroleum fraction boiling above 300‹C with oxygen and/or air at atmospheric pressure at at least 280‹C and subjecting the blown product to a thermal treatment at 280-500‹C in the absence of oxygen and/or air. The heavy petroleum fractions used in the examples are furfural extracts of vacuum distillates of crude oils and an asphalt obtained by the propane deasphalting of a vacuum distillation residue of a crude oil; the use of petroleum distillation residue and fractions obtained from the conversion (e.g. visbreaking and catalytic or thermal cracking) of petroleum fractions is also referred to. Coke is produced by coking a paste comprising 1-10 weight per cent of the pitch and non-coking and/or poor-coking coal.
