In the prodn. of a natural humus-former and fertiliser from comminuted tree bark, the comminuted bark is subjected to a steam atmos. at 70-90 degrees C. and is then dried at lower temp. to a moisture content of is not 30%. Pref. the bark is first pre-comminuted, then dried at 90 degrees and comminuted to the finally required fineness. The steam treatment renders the bark more susceptible to composing processes, and destroys pathogenic, organisms without adversely affecting desirable bacteria, enzymes and the flora of the bark, so that biological activators are not required for the subsequent composting process. The composting (or rotting) process can take place after application to the soil, in which case it may be complete within ca. 2-4 months.
|
