A rubber sole (1) for a shoe has an integrally formed heel (2) with a cavity (3) in order to provide adequate flexibility. The heel (2) is strengthened by two transverse ribs (4). A sheet steel layer (5) is embedded in the rubber sole (1) in order to protect the wearer's foot from penetration by sharp objects. This steel layer (5) is provided with a circular hole at the heel end so that a ring of metal (11) surrounds the cavity (3). This shape of the steel layer (5) provides a sole of adequate strength without impairing the flexibility of the heel (2) or of the complete sole (1).
