[Also in Division C3] A substrate is coated by applying to it a film of a paint binder comprising a solution in one or more vinyl or vinylidene monomers of a binder resin which is a polymer containing side-chains of the formula: (in which Y is a hydrogen atom or methyl group) and which is the reaction product of an acryloyl or methacryloyl halide with a hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate or a hydrolysed copolymer of vinyl acetate with an ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and curing the paint binder by the action of an electron beam. In the Examples zinc phosphate coated steel, glass, wood, paper and aluminium substrates are coated. |
