The fill is encapsulated whilst in the liquid, i.e. molten, state by any of the conventional methods used to fill soft gelatin capsules. In particular, a fill containing 5-58% by weight of water may be used and the final water content reduced to 5-20% by drying the formed capsules. Suitable materials for the gel-lattice matrix are water-soluble polypeptides, e.g. gelatin, casein, collagen, soya protein, albumin and soy peptone, polysaccharides, e.g. pectin, agar, tragacanth, chondrus, alginates, guar, modified starch and Icelandic moss, and synthetic polymers e.g. P.V.P., methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, sodium cellulose sulphate, polyacrylic acid, polyethylene maleic anhydride and polyvinyl alcohol. Numerous examples are given in which the active materials are a variety of pharmaceuticals.
