A tool for the operation comprises a hollow outer member 29 provided with abutments 32 and legs 31 which fit between four fingers 23 of the retaining element, and an inner member 30 provided with abutments 35. When the inner member 30 is lifted by a screw 37 the retaining member is dished to cause radial contraction and permit insertion into the yoke arm 14. The tool may be turned by a spanner. Alternatively, the tool may be operated by a machine, the screw and nut being replaced by a piston and cylinder unit. The retaining element 21 may be made from steel strip, hardened and tempered. The annular groove 27 in the opposite yoke arm 15 may be formed before assembly of the cross and needle bearing cups 17, the retaining element 28 being either identical to the retaining element 21 or in the form of a circlip.</p> |
