<p>The article is treated with a hot soln. such taht the antraquinone and the resultant stannate are soluble in the solvent, which is pref. water. The alkali is pref. NaOH or KOH and the anthrquinone may have >=1 sulphonate substit. to ensure solubility. Anthraquinone concn. should be 0.5-10 g./l. and the alkali concn. 1-10% w/v. Detinning is facilitated by the presence of oxygen, achieved either by spray treatment or by immersion in an aerated soln. Furthermore the process is enhanced by the presence of a stainless steel cathode in the soln. Detinning is accelerated relative to known chemical and electrochemical processes. Process recovers Sn or Sn alloy from scrap cans and from plated scrap; also from strip where Sn has been applied merely as lubricant for drawing and is not to be retained in service. The Sn may be subsequently recovered from the stannate soln. by electrodeposition.</p> |
