<p>1369317 Purification of aqueous medium FMC CORP 9 Oct 1972 [8 Oct 1971 22 May 1972] 46530/72 Heading C1C A process for the treatment of aqueous liquids having solids present therein comprises mixing the liquid with the following additives, a bactericidal agent, a colloidal solids coagulating agent, a filter aid and an absorbent, passing the resultant mixture through a liquid- and air-tight system so as to effect intimate mixing of the additives and liquid, and to maintain solids in suspension, and then separating the liquid portion of the suspension from the solids associated therewith. Prior to or after mixing the additives, the liquid containing solids may be subjected to a disintegration step to break down the size of the solids. The bactericidal agent is preferably a halogen-containing chemical (e.g. calcium hypochlorite), the filter aid is preferably a diatomaceous earth, the absorbent may be activated carbon, fullers' earth, bauxite or a synthetic polymer, and the colloidal solids coagulating agent may be an aluminium or ferric salt. A further additive, in the form of a pH control agent, may be incorporated in the liquid. A suitable pH control agent is an alkali metal salt. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, wherein waste is mixed with additives in the toilet 10 and passes via pipe 12 to the holding tank 15. Mounted within this tank is a manually actuated pump 19. The waste and additives pass through inlet 20 and check valve 22 to internal chamber 21. A flexible diaphragm 23, actuated by rod 24, exerts a pressure on the liquid-additive mixture in the chamber 21. Solids in the liquid are disintegrated on passage through check valves 22 and 26. The resultant mixture is returned to the holding tank via outlet 27. The liquid-additive mixture then passes to filter tank 29 for separation. In alternative forms, the apparatus may contain a pressure filter or a rotary vacuum filter.</p> |
