By "phenolic compound" is meant those organic compounds which contain an aromatic radical and at least one hydroxyl group linked directly to a carbon atom contained in the nucleus of the aromatic radical. The expressions "acetal" and "ketal" are meant to mean the reaction products of compounds containing one or more hydroxylic groups with compounds containing a carbonyl function such as aldehydes (forming acetals) and ketones (forming ketals).
