Melting down of scrap, sponge iron, or similar matls. in a shaft-furnace in counter current to a fuel-oxygen flame in the bottom of the furnace and with a tap-hole for the melt in the hearth, esp. for use in continuous steel mfr. using a superheating vessel, is improved by the use of two tap-holes, one for the molten metal, forming a communicating pipe between the furnace and the superheating vessel, the second tap-hole being employed to remove slag. The communicating pipe is pref. induction heated and the superheating vessel is pref. an arc furnace or an induction furnace, several alternative designs being provided. Aggressive slags are removed before the molten metal enters the superheating vessel, so that the life of the refractory lining in the superheating vessel is increased.
|
