The quartz oscillator for an electronic timepiece comprises a rectangular quartz chip (5), which is supported by wires (8a, 8b) running parallel to the opposing planar surfaces of the chip. An electrode layer (6) is provided on the opposing surfaces of the quartz chip by vapour deposition, with the support wires (8a, 8b) attached by solder cones (7a, 7b) to the respective electrode layers (6). Pref. the solder cones (7a, 7b) are positioned along a nodal vibration line and the other end of each wire (8a, 8b) is coupled to a support substrate (12) with an electrode layer (13a, 13b) on its facing surfaces.
