Visual recording system for alphanumeric information - uses ultrasonic beam striking surface of recording medium causing visible surface changes

Visual recording system for alphanumeric information used a beam of ultrasonic energy to effect visible changes in the surface structure of the recording medium which can be base e.g. on paper, metal, ceramic or elastic. The energy beam is produced by an ultrasonic generator whose sound intensity for the required colour and/or tonal symbol definition can be modulated corresponding to the necessary values for the recording carrier material used. The sensitive layer on the support material is optically opaque and dark but its thickness is diminished locally by the ultrasonic radiation so that it becomes increasingly transparent. The carrier material has e.g. a light reflecting surface on its side which carries the sensitive layer.
