The idler roller for an endless conveyor belt has a shaft (30) whose ends are supported by bearings or pillow blocks (24). The central section of the shaft supports an elastic sleeve (36) the latter being formed with reduced diameter sections from which extend radial ribs (40). The ribs are pref. arranged in sets of three, alternating sets being axially aligned but staggered relative to the adjacent sets. The shaft may be tubular, its weight being reduced by axial grooves. Adjacent series of ribs may be joined by rings (38) formed integrally with the sleeve.
