K L OHLSON 7 Jan 1974 00665/74 Heading A4B A wall-like element 1, intended for use in bookshelves or like furniture or as a room divider, comprises a stiffening frame 2 to which are secured fasteners 4, a casing 3 housing the frame 2 and defining the outer surface of the element 1, and a compressible material 6, e.g. plastics, disposed between the casing and the frame, the fasteners 4 each projecting from the frame by a distance such that the free end 4a of each fastener is either flush with, or projects beyond, the outer surface of the element 1, whereby compression of the compressible material 6 causes or increases projection of the free end 4a. Each fastener 4 includes a neck 4b. The frame 2 may include sub-frame members 2a extending transversely (as shown) or substantially diagonally thereof. The casing may include a sliding clasp fastener facilitating its removal and replacement. The elements 1 may form the backwall of a bookcase or may form end-walls in which shelves detachably engage the fasteners 4. Two forms of fastening device are described, Figs. 12 and 14, for securing together wall-like elements 1 by engagement with their fasteners 101 (these being equivalent to the fasteners 4). In one form of device, Fig. 12, two identical parts 102, 103 of circular or regular polygon shape in plan are drawn together by a screw 104 to retain the head 101a of the fastener in a groove 102a, 103a defined by the parts 102, 103 with the neck 101b of the fastener located in a mouth defined between flanges 102b, 103b of the parts. In another form of the device, a tube 105 has arrays of circumferentially spaced holes 105a, 105b located in spaced planes. A rod 106 is mounted within the tube 105 for axial displacement by a screw 109. To effect securement a fastener 101 is passed through a hole 105a or 105b and the rod 106 is displaced by turning the screw 109 whereby the head 101a is engaged in a recess 107a of a projection 107 carried by the rod 106 and the neck 101b is located between a flange 107b of the projection and an upper edge of the hole 105a or 105b. |
