1457900 Casting processes; continuous casting SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd and SUMITOMO SHIPBUILDING & MACHINERY CO Ltd 19 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972] 58781/73 Heading B3F [Also in Division F4] To reduce segregation, porosity and dentrite growth and permit faster cooling, molten metal 3 in a mould 1 or continuously cast solidified shell 2 is agitated by the effect of relative movement of the molten metal and a heterogeneous magnetostatic field of an intensity greater than 10,000 gauss generated by at least one superconducting solenoid magnet 5. The magnet 5 or 5<SP>1</SP> is positioned at one side in a cryostat 7. A stainless steel ingot mould 1, Fig. 1, or cryostat 7, is moved horizontally or vertically or they are both so moved perpendicularly to one another. In continuous casting, Fig. 3, the magnets 5, 5<SP>1</SP> remain stationary by the descending strand in or directly below the secondary cooling zone. The cryostat 7, containing the superconducting solenoid magnet, contains liquid He and employs auxiliary cooling by means of liquid nitrogen, Fig. 5, 6 (not shown).
