<p>Container esp. for holding food, comprises (1) an inner sheet of cellulosic or polymeric material which has low food permeability, coated on the non-food-contacting side with (2) an oxygen scavenger compsn. contg. >=1 water soluble (bi)sulphite metabisulphite or hydrosulphite salts and covered with (3) an outer sheet of polymeric material. The food prod. may be inserted or poured into the container and the container may then be sealed to provide an air-tight enclosure. The container is esp. useful for packaging liqs. such as wine, or semi-solids such as tomato paste or ketchup. The removal of oxygen tending to pass through the container wall from the exterior serves to reduce surface discolouration or other degradation of the food prod. while the SO2 evolved from the sulphite cpd. acts as a preservative.</p> |
