Simple float switch for brake fluid level alarm - incorporates self-cleaning contact washer attached to float plunger giving rocking and sliding action

The simple float switch for level alarms in hydraulically-operated braking systems consists of a float (1) suspended from a vertical rod (2). The upper part of the rod has a bush (3) welded to it. The bush has flanges and passes through a clearance hole in the centre of a contact disc so that the disc is loosely held by the bush. The disc is thus captive but is afforded a certain amount of axial and lateral play. Two contact studs (5) held on the ends of arms (6) are positioned below the contact maker disc on opposite edges but offset from the centre line. When the disc is displaced by the movement of the float, a rocking, sliding action is thus imparted to the contact surfaces which breaks down any oxide layer and maintains a reliable switching action.
