Band-like workpiece with a guide strip to which are fixed stop plates (1), in the form of mounting plates with holders (22) for fittings e.g. a seal or hinge, is supplied to a hammer machine for separating and simultaneous sly attaching the stop plates to boxes. Adjacent stop plates with adjoining broad sides (2) are combined to form the band-like workpiece which is supplied to the machine via the broad plates. Webs (7) may be provided between the adjoining broad sides of adjacent stop plates, or the plates may continue into each other at their broad sides. Compared with supply via the end side, only short advance is required. Also, the plates are not subject to longitudinal curvature on the roll or during hammering.
