The leading end of a sliver to be combed is guided by clamp elements onto a rotating comb to comb and open the leading end whilst the trailing end of a sliver which has already been combed is supported on a belt supported between a main roller and a grooved support roll. The direction of movement of the belt is reversible so that the rail of the trailing end of the sliver can be caused to overhang the belt and extend into a duct to which a suction is applied. When the leading end of the sliver has been combed a wall of the duct is e.g. pivoted to hold the tail of the sliver against the belt, and the clamp elements release the leading end of the sliver so that it can pass via a guide comb onto the belt. The direction of movement of the belt is then reversed so that the leading end of the sliver is superimposed on the tail of the sliver. A grooved wall co-operating with the grooved support roll acts on the slivers to ensure the fibres mix and the two slivers are joined together. The mechanism is simpler than conventional arrangements for joining sliver together.
|
