The tool for preloading of leaf springs is used esp. for preloading contactor springs. The springs are permanently deformed by bending out of their initial plane along the longitudinal axis. The leaf springs are preloaded with narrow dispersion of the required forces. A spring is drawn longitudinally in its initial plane at least over part of its length through a gap with flat jaws (6, 7). The spring rate is individually measured before the drawing process and the spring defection necessary for the required preload is calculated from this measurement. The permanent deformation(s) of the spring is influenced by modifying the angle of inclination of the drawing jaws.
