1504776 Ethane and ethylene by hydrocracking DAVY POWERGAS Ltd 9 Aug 1976 [14 Aug 1975] 33928/75 Heading C5E A hydrocarbon feedstock containing at least one C 3 or higher hydrocarbon is subjected to vapour phase destructive hydrogenation at a feedstock to hydrogen ratio favouring the formation of ethane and ethylene rather than methane, the reaction being prevented from self-quenching by supplying to the hydrogenation zone hot combustion gases resulting from at least partial oxidation of a carbonaceous fuel with an oxygen-containing gas, and recovering from the hydrogenation zone a product stream containing ethane and ethylene. Ethane may be separated from the product stream and subjected to steam pyrolysis to form ethylene, the hydrogen formed being recycled to the hydrogenation zone. The destructive hydrogenation may be carried out at 650-750‹ C., and at 3-70 atmospheres absolute, optionally in the presence of a catalyst or inert material in a fluidized bed.
