1504872 Magnetic bearings STRATHEARN AUDIO Ltd 14 Feb 1975 [14 Feb 1974] 6849/74 Heading F2A A linear bearing, e.g. for a gramophone pickup arm, comprises a permanent magnet slide 1 having a V-shaped channel 2 providing two bearing faces and a slider 3 of magnetic material having sides 4 and 5 providing further bearing faces which co-operate with the channel 2, the slide 1 being magnetized as shown to retain a coating of magnetic lubricating fluid 8 over the surfaces of the channel 2. In other embodiments, the slider is a permanent magnet and the slide is of magnetic or non-magnetic material (Figs. 1b and 3b, not shown); the slide is magnetized transversely of its length (Fig. 2c, not shown), or is magnetized such that a pole appears on a surface not concerned with the sliding action (Fig. 3d, not shown); or the channel is of U-section (Figs. 2d, and 2b, not shown). Both the slider and the slide may consist of or contain permanent magnets, e.g. in the form of strips exhibiting different magnetic polarities. |
