1504524 Jointing or terminating cables BICC Ltd 5 May 1976 [6 May 1975] 19015/75 Heading B5A An electric cable C is jointed or terminated by locating a longitudinally split plastics sleeve 1, of, for example, polythene, over the cable adjacent the joint on termination. The sleeve is internally supported by a two-part rigid tube 4 and the edges 2 of the sleeve adjacent the or each split are chamfered to define a groove 3 of V-shaped cross-section. A mould 5 having an elongated groove 6 is clamped by bands 8 with the groove 6 located over the groove 3. Feed and discharge ports are provided in the mould which communicate with the groove 6. In use, molten plastics, for example polythene, is introduced through alternate ports, this being continued until the plastics exudes from the other ports. The feed is then terminated and the plastics is allowed to cool, any shrinkage being accommodated or by lowering plungers within some of the ports. After solidification, the mould and support tube are removed and the sleeve moved into position over the joint or termination where it is welded to similar perhaps non-plastics, sleeves to complete the jointing or terminating operation. It may be necessary to preheat the mould and the groove in the sleeve to initially soften the groove by introducing hot gas into the mould prior to the introduction of plastics material. It is preferred for the mould and support tube to extend beyond the ends of the sleeve, any projecting plastics material being cut off before the sleeve is moved to its final position. |
