Olefins are disproportionated or co-disproportionated in the presence of a catalyst comprising a SiO 2 support promoted with (i) an oxide, sulphide or hexacarbonyl of W or Mo, or an oxide of Te or Re or a mixture of two or more thereof, and (ii) a basic compound of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. Examples describe the disproportionation of (1) propylene to yield ethylene and butenes, (2) isobutene to yield ethylene and dimethylbutene, (3) an equimolar mixture of propylene and isobutene to yield ethylene, other butenes and various methylbutenes, (4) isobutene and 2-butene to branched pentenes, (5) 1-butene to 3-hexene and ethylene, (6) 2-butene to 2-pentene et alia. |
