A process for the production of carbon monoxide in which a mixture comprising methyl formate and methanol is heated in the presence of an alkali metal catalyst other than an alkali metal alcoholate, whereby the methyl formate in said mixture of methyl formate and methanol is pyrolytically decomposed to produce carbon monoxide, characterised in that the concentration of methyl formate in the said mixture is higher than 70 wt.%.
