<p>1400215 Biological purification MICROPHOR Inc 14 June 1972 27878/72 Heading C1C In a process for biologically purifying waste liquid the liquid is passed through fibrous material (e.g. strips or bundles of bark fibres) supporting a biological community which consumes organic matter in the liquid. A suitable apparatus comprises a tank divided into chambers 32, 34, 36 containing bundles of fibres 56, 66, 88 respectively, and provided with inlet 24 for waste from, e.g. a toilet in a vehicle, and inlet 92 for oxygen-containing gas (e.g. air or oxygen) from source 26. Chamber 32 contains partitions 48 and chamber 36 is divided into compartments 78, 80, 82 by partitions 74, 76. In use waste liquid flows from inlet 24, through chambers 32 and 34 and compartments 78, 80, 82 of chamber 36 to outlet 28, the liquid being treated with aerobic and anaerobic micro-organisms during its passage. The liquid may be treated with sodium hypochlorite in compartment 82. In another embodiment (not shown) the apparatus may comprise a tank divided into two chambers by a horizontal perforated partition with horizontal perforated baffles in the upper chamber. The partition and baffles support in their perforations fibrous bundles, the bundles being longer at the sides. The tank is open to the atmosphere and air is sucked through the tank. The tanks may be made of synthetic plastics.</p> |
