Using a distance measuring unit operating with a Doppler radar, this system determines the Doppler frequency from the reflected signal and from this, the distance travelled can be determined in the receiving branch. Such a distance measuring system exhibits at least one sharply focused antenna (A1) which is arranged inclined to the direction of travel at a certain angle ( alpha 1). The Doppler frequency (fd1) is determined from the received signal and the distance travelled is determined as first measurement value by integration over time. To improve the measuring accuracy, response beacons are arranged at previously known distances along the distance to be travelled, which beacons, when driven over, trigger a particular signal in the distance measuring device which, due to the known distances, is used for correcting the distance determined as first measurement value by the determination of the Doppler frequency in the distance measuring unit. <IMAGE>
