Polar sea oil prodn. platform - having chain cutting device for clearing ice cover around support structure

An offshore oil prodn. platform for use in the continental shelf area of polar sear isequipped with ice cutting devices on the support structure part within the range of the ice cover. These devices consist of cutter chains with an oscillating or translating motion, mounted on a sleeve which can be moved upwards and downwards. This is a better soln. than the provision of conical run-up surfaces on the support structure. The cutting mechanism can be designed on the basis of measured data and does not rely on the ice thrust which cannot be measured.
