The bursting welch washer is for use as a safety device in boilers etc., having an annular flange gripped between two annular clamping members, the pressure acting on the side of the washer which later becomes concave. The member on the other side of the washer is radiused in two sections. The first is of small radius (22), almost like a slightly chamfered edge, and this joins onto a taper face (16) on the inside of the member. The second member (14) can have a seat ending at the inside in a right-angled edge (20). The pressure exerted by the second member on the washer can be equal to 40-55% of its breaking pressure.
