A hot gas with a value of 10-400 (200-300) BTU/ft3, and free from S, halogen and solid particles is obtd. by (a) reacting a SI contg. coal, air, steam and Na (hydr)oxide and/or (bi)carbonate, at 750-850 degrees C, with atomic ratios in O2 in air:C in coal of 1:1-5 (1:1-3) and of Na:S in coal of 2:1 esp. 2-6:1, to produce Na2S, and (b) reacting the Na2S from step (a) with additional coal of C in coal:O2 in air of at 200-650 degrees C, with atomic ratio of C in coal:O2 in air of 2-3:1 and molar ratio of Na2S:C in coal of 1:3-10, to regenerate Na2CO3. The process operates at atmos. press. and does not require a molten salt or aq. Na2CO3 solns. Heat loss is avoided. A usable S cpd. is produced.
