A passage for a shaft through a wall, esp. through the safety containment of a nuclear power plant, comprises shaft seals in which the stationary components are connected to the wall. Means for limiting the axial and radial movements of the shaft are provided; the shaft has a point of intentional weakness within the thickness of the wall; and outside the wall the shaft is enclosed by a shielded housing which also comprises some of the stationary sealing components and movement-limiting components. Used esp. for connecting a gas turbine and compressor unit, located inside the containment, to a generator located outside the containment. This enables the generator to be in a normal access zone. The arrangement ensures that, if the shaft should break either due to wear or due to an accident, a portion of it always remains within the wall to form a seal and the seals are connected to the wall.
