The sidewalls of the tyres are fitted with special panels, with ribbed surfaces, onto which can be engraved the vehicle licence code, or similar identifying markings. The engraving can be cut or burnt into the panels. Several panels are fitted so that if the vehicle licence plates are changed, then one panel can be cancelled and a new one engraved. The panels are either fitted when the tyre is made or are applied afterwards. They are designed so that the existing code cannot be altered without damaging the panel.
