Seals for rocker box covers for an internal combustion engine are formed by applying a strip of self-curing silicone rubber along the joint interface thick enough to be gripped by the rim of the cover when the latter is supported on its studs at a level controlled by concave spring spacers. After the rubber has cured in situ, the cover is then tightened down, the springs being flattened to allow the peripheral elastomeric seal to be clamped in compression.S Suitable for vehicle prodn. line schedules, the rocker box being mounted 15-30 minutes after deposition of the sealant, during engine assembly, and tightened down at least 24h later, after vehicle assembly, the elastomer having thus had sufficient time to develop its elastic properties by curing at ambient temps.
|
