1502894 Brazing ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd 8 Aug 1975 [13 Sept 1974] 33162/75 Heading B3R A method of brazing a Zr alloy appendage 2 to a Zr alloy member 1 (e.g. a spacer and a nuclear sheath respectively) comprises coating the appendage 2 with a material which will form a eutectic with the Zr alloy (e.g. Be, Mn, Fe, Cu or steel), heating the appendage in a non- oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. argon or a vacuum, to a temperature sufficient to form the aforesaid eutectic (1000‹ C. if Be is used) such that the member 1 is also heated but below itsα-# transformation temperature, forcing the appendage and member together, continuing to heat the appendage and member, the latter still below its transformation temperature, and removing the heat and pressure to allow solidification of the joint. In apparatus for performing the method the heating is accomplished by an induction heating coil 15 which surrounds the appendage 2, force is applied by a piston 4 in a pneumatic cylinder 9, through a force determining spring 11, piston travel being limited by a stop 12, the appendage is held in a ceramic vacuum holder 6. Disclosed suitable Zr alloys are 2À5% Nb, remainder Zr; 1% Nb, remainder Zr; 1À5% Cr, 0À1% Fe, remainder Zr; 2 and 4 Zircoloy.
|
