The invention relates to quaternary cationic monomers and polymers and copolymers prepared thereof, based upon salts of methacrylic or acrylic esters of the general formula I <IMAGE> I where R1 is H or CH3 R2 is CH3, C6H5 or p-CH3C6H4 n is 1 or 2 AND Y+ is -N+(CH3)3, -N+(CH3)2CH2CH2OH, <IMAGE> where R3 is H, CH3, CONH2, CHO, COCH3 and R4 is H or CH2CH2OH.
