1439244 Liquid crystal compositions; toilet bars PROCTER & GAMBLE CO 28 Sept 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 45479/73 Headings C4X and C5D [Also in Division A5] A liquid crystal phase forming, or present in, a composition comprises 5-49% by weight of an amphoteric material of the formula where R is alkyl from C 1 to C 20 , R1 is H or alkyl from C 1 to C 20 , 1#n#6 and X is -CO 2 M, -SO 3 M, or -PO 3 M 2 and M is hydrogen or a water soluble cation such as an alkali metal, ammonium, tetra-alkyl-ammonium or alkanolammonium; 1-30% by weight of a functional organic liquid which remains liquid over the temperature range 0-100‹ C.; and the balance of the phase comprises water and is essentially free of organic anionic materials of the formula R2Y, where R2 is a hydrocarbyl group containing 8 or more carbon atoms, and Y is an anionic group. R is preferably a C 8 to C 14 group, R1 preferably C 1 to C 6 or, particularly, hydrogen, and n is preferably 2. Particularly preferred are amphoteric materials where R is lauryl and/or myristyl and M is H, Na or K. The organic liquid is, or contains in solution, a functional or aesthetic material, e.g. a biocide, sunscreen, cosmetic oil, hydrocarbon oils with molecular weight greater than 73, fatty oils, perfume (esters and cyclic or bicyclic ketones), skin emollient (polypropylene glycol or polyethylene glycol and esters), hair and skin preparations (amides), amines for insect bite relief, polydimethylsiloxanes for barrier hand creams, and dimer-trimer acids for skin irritancy palliatives. Other materials mentioned include softening agents, static control agents for hair, antistatic agents, insecticides and antimicrobial agents. If an excess of one component is present the excess forms a phase in addition to the liquid crystal phase. The compositions are intended for application to surfaces such as skin, hair, textiles, plants and are preferably acidified, e.g. with citric acid or lactic acid, to a pH approximating the isoelectric point of the amphoteric material before application. The compositions are suitable for incorporationinto carrier vehicles such as creams, oils, sticks, sprays and toilet bars. A toilet bar comprises 18-50% of a C 12 -C 20 alkyl ester of sulfoacetic acid or isethionic acid, 1-15% of a liquid crystal phase as defined above, together with water and fillers such as starch and flour.
