1441892 Nuclear reactor containments KRAFTWERK UNION AG 24 July 1974 [27 July 1973] 32780/74 Heading G6C In a nuclear reactor containment, a space between the steel reactor pressure vessel 1 and surrounding concrete biological shield 8 contains, adjacent the pressure vessel 1, a thermal insulating layer 2 and, adjacent the biological shield 8, a layer of blocks 12 incorporating cooling ducts 14, residual gaps 18, 19 between the shield and blocks, and blocks and thermal insulating layer being filled with mortar 20. The blocks 12 may be of concrete. The thermal insulating layer 2 comprises segments 3 formed of concrete clad with steel 4. Recesses 5 accommodate lifting bars 6 to enable grappling of the segments 3 by crane; a layer 22 of plastics or metal sheet between the mortar and layer 2 enables relative thermally induced movement. A space 5 between the layer 2 and vessel 1 is taken up by expansion of the vessel 1 as the reactor, e.g. a PWR, is brought to its operating temperature. |
