Polymerisable compsn. comprises (a) 1 pt. wt. of an unsatd. polyester resin syrup, (b) 0.1-10 pts. wt. aq. alkali-stabilised colloidal silica and (c) a polymerisation initiator for the unsatd. polyester. The compsns. are useful in the prodn. of coatings, laminates, cast articles and mouldings with good thermal insulating properties and good fire resistance, with low flame spread and low smoke content. When exposed to flame the organic content is burnt off to leave an inorganic refractory material which resists further thermal deterioration and thermal transfer. |
