Parent patent described the mfr. of optical fibres, esp. gradient fibres, where glass batches, possibly with different refractive indices (RI) are successively fed into a rotating crucible for melting and forming a laminated glass cylinder on the internal wall of the crucible, from which an optical fibre is then drawn. In this addn., glass forming layers are deposited on the inner wall of the rotating crucible from a liq. phase, and the layers are then converted into glass films. The liq. phase is pref. a soln. contg. cpds. (a) Se, Te, P, As, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb, Ti, B, Al, Mg, Ca, Ba, Sr, Li, Na, K, Rb. The cpds. are thermally decomposed to form a glass. The soln. is pref. an ester of low alcohols with low carboxylic acids, low ketones, and/or low alcohols, contg. the mono- or di-carboxylic acid salts of element(s) or their halides, excluding Ti halides.
