The long wall coal mining machine has a drive unit (10) mounted with its own drive on a face conveyor (12). A main front cutter (17) and an auxiliary cutter (19) are operated in both cutting directions along the coal face (28). The drive has a gearwheel (11) which engages a chain (13) along the conveyor. Each section (17, 18) of the main cutter and those (19, 20) of the auxiliary cutter has one or more hydraulic operated hammer members (21, 22) and each hammer carried cutting tools (25, 26) mounted on cutter carriers (23, 24), these being secured in two sets, one above the other. The cutting tolls are L shaped, and the lower set (26) operating against the floor and coalface, while the upper set (25) operate on the roof.
