The fault-finding processing for avoiding faults in material when cutting out pattern pieces is undertaken when laying out layers of material by comparing the relevant layer with the original cutting image on a scale of 1:1. In the event of a fault it can be detected whether this occurs in the material waste area so that it can be disregarded or whether it can be brought into the position by turning, rotating or displacing the relevant layer. This comparison is achieved using a comparison table which is mounted parallel to the cutting out table and contains an original pattern image with true co-ordinates. The comparison table also supports a measuring carriage which is rigidly coupled to the laying-out carriage, and is provided with a transversely displaceable television camera which stores the measured values.
