The mass 8 may be treated by rolling the mas between at least two relatively moving surfaces to form the mass into a cylinder in which groups of hyphae are spirally arranged when the cylinder is viewed in cross-section. the filaments within the groups having their axes atenuated and parallel to that of the cylinder and having layers of discontinuity therebetween. The surfaces may comprise an endless belt 1 and plate 2. Means 9 may be provided downstream of the surfaces to form the cylinder into two or more tiers (Figs. 3-6) by folding or cutting. The tiered mass may be further rolled to form a second cylinder (Fig. 9). The finished cylinder may have a length at least 15-30 times that of the original mass 8. The latter may have reduced turgor and a solids content of 20-40% by weight. |
