In a mould filling system, a vertical refractory inlet pipe or downstrick is located in the top of a mould and surrounded by an annular cavity filled with a plastic sealing mass. The top end of the inlet pipe is in the bore of a refractory ring (a), which can slide axially into the sealant.A bottom pour lable has an outlet nozzle combined with an outlet pipe which enters ring (a) and is pressed towards the top of the mould inlet pipe, so the two pipes form a continuous channel for the stream of molten metal. The top of ring is pref. covered with a refractory ring seal; and a removable ring is pref. fitted round the outside of ring (a).The system combines the advantages of a bottom-pour stopper; a runner bush subjected to the pressure of the molten metal in the ladle; and the exclusion of air to prevent oxidn. of the metal without the need to use a protective or inert gas.
