PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the titled fibers having good spinnability, by heating coal tar, etc., keeping the temperature thereof, hydrogenating the coal tar, etc., in the presence of a solvent, removing solid materials and the solvent, heating the formed hydrogenated pitch at a high temperature, keeping the temperature thereof, melt spinning the resultant pitch, infusibilizing and carbonizing the resultant fibers. CONSTITUTION:Coal tar or coal tar pitch is heated to 450-500 deg.C at >=30 deg.C/min heating rate under reduced pressure or while blowing an inert gas and kept at this temperature for <=60min. The resultant coal tar or coal tar pitch is then hydrogenated in the presence of a solvent at 400-470 deg.C to remove insoluble solid materials and the solvent to afford a hydrogenated pitch, which is then heated to 400-500 deg.C at >=30 deg.C/min heating rate under reduced pressure or while blowing an inert gas, kept at this temperature for <=120min, melt spun, infusibilized at 280-400 deg.C in the presence of oxygen and then carbonized at 1,000-1,500 deg.C to afford the aimed carbon fibers.
