A combined scrubber and filter, capable of being back-flushed, and used for water purification comprises a closed vessel with an air vent at the top, raw water inlet near the top and purified water outlet at the bottom, the scrubber zone comprises a stack or bed of chemically inert particles or rings, to remove free excess CO2 and achieve lime-CO2 equilibrium. Air flows upwards in contraflow to the water. The combined arrangement is as follows: the upper part of the vessel comprises the scrubber zone, separated by a frating from the filter zone below it, this filter zone also comprises particles, rings etc. The fresh air inlet for the scrubber zone is situated between the scrubber and filter zones, at the bottom of the vessel is the back-flushing feed, comprising the flushing water inlet which is combined with the purified water outlet, and a compressed air inlet pipe. There are two outlets for flushing water, one of these being situated between the scrubber and filtering zones, while the other is above the scrubber zone and is combined with the raw water inlet. |
