The crusher which handles cellulose chippings, is provided with a foreign matter separating device which prevents heavier particles from reaching the impeller. The loose cellulose material is fed into the casing (30) of the crushing impeller in vertical direction through feed hopper (1). Inside the hopper several chutelike inclined partitions (11 to 14) counteract a possible clogging-up of the material in the hopper. Underneath the partition (14) the outer skin (55) is fitted with a fluted laterally orientated opening (57) through which a constant airstream is entering the hopper produced by the suction of the impeller. The airstream loosens the material travelling downwards, so that only the specifically light material is carried into the impeller, whereas the heavier particles continue to drop downwards and leave the hopper at the bottom opening (60).
