A bulk milk handling installation has a main supply line connected to a pump, which forces the milk up through a pipe with a control valve (10) on top. A branch outlet discharges into an air separator vessel which has a quantity measuring device at its outlet. This valve has a sliding valve member (15) above the inlet (12) with an annular chamber (14) around it. The valve member controls the flow (16) into the chamber, the branch outlet (13) being alongside. This member carries a cup shaped component (25) which holds a membrane (20) down onto its top surface. The membrane is clamped between the valve body (11) and a top cap (21). A spring (24) fits inside the cup (25), and is held down by the cap (21). An alternative design has a valve member formed by a squeeze tube.
