Heat treating aluminium alloys to give good hot workability - by homogenising at high temp. and cooling slowly

Hot workability of Al alloys is improved by homogenising at 950-1050 degrees F for 2-12 hrs. and cooling to >=800 degrees F at a rate of 100 degrees F/hr. The alloys treated are pref. those of seres 5000. After treatment the alloys are cooled to room temp. and may then be reheated to 800-1025 degrees F and hot worked. After such hot working the alloys are pref. cooled and stretched. Al-Mg alloys can be extruded at higher speeds.
